The “Fairness” Doctrine

Published by Jason M under Politics

The Fairness Doctrine was a regulation of the FCC. It required that all controversial issues of public importance to be presented in an equal and balanced manner. In other words if anyone voiced a viewpoint the broadcast licensee that transmitted the opinion had to give equal time to any opposing viewpoint. Most broadcast licensee’s would simply stop broadcasting any controversial viewpoint, because the headache of giving anyone equal airtime that apposed an opinion would simply be to great. The FCC abolished the Fairness Doctrine in 1987. The FCC stated, “the intrusion by government into the content of programming occasioned by the enforcement of [the Fairness Doctrine] restricts the journalistic freedom of broadcasters … (and) actually inhibits the presentation of controversial issues of public importance to the detriment of the public and the degradation of the editorial prerogative of broadcast journalists.” (Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairness_Doctrine) The left recently has tried to bring this regulation up again, which is no suprise. The Fairness Doctrine is just another method for them to infringe on freedom of speech and to stop conservative talk radio. The Fairness Doctrine sounds good in name and with it’s basic definition, but as with most of the liberal agenda, there is a much deeper and more devious plan. However the most alarming developments have been the Republicans who have commented negatively on talk radio and have voiced support for the Fairness Doctrine. Namely, Trent Lott’s recent comments. “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.” Problem?? What is that about? Didn’t talk radio come to his defence in the Strom Thurmond case? Isn’t talk radio part of the reason for him holding his Senate office? Now he is stabbing his “friends” in the back just to get in favor with the main stream media. Are we getting another John Mccain? In order for conservatism to advance and move forward as an ideology, conservatives need to work together instead of fighting each other.

Vacation….

Published by Jason M under General

YES, I am finally going on vacation. I am going to the beaches of Florida. Yes, it is the summer and it will be hot, but Sarasota is know for it’s mild summers so it should be nice. I am planning on spending as much time on the beach as possible. I am taking my snorkling gear along. If I can find a SCUBA rental place, I may do some diving. I am going to take my golf clubs along and see if I can get a round in at one of the beautiful courses in Sarasota. There is a whole group of us going down, so I am driving down instead of flying as I usually do.
